This past Saturday I attended a MediVan & Health Community Services Inc. flea market with free health screenings. They provided free blood pressure and blood glucose checks to anybody who showed up. There was also a mini flea market to try to raise funds to provide no cost health care to uninsured Broward County residents. American Diabetes Wholesale was the only diabetic supply company there with a display.
Out of the all the diabetics that I met there, one particular family stood out the most. A young lady, along with her parents, approached our display, with a look of great interest on her face. I introduced myself and American Diabetes Wholesale, and discovered that the father was a diabetic.
They had quite a dilemma too. In addition to being uninsured, the man could not meet his doctor’s testing requirements. Apparently, his doctor’s instructions were to test 4-5 times a day, but, due to their financial situation, he could only afford to test once in the morning and once before bedtime. As a diabetic myself, I realized it was vital for him to test as per his doctor’s orders, and the cost of supplies should not hinder his health. He was greatly relieved to find out about our company and the great discounts we offer on diabetic products.
This story is another example of how American Diabetes Wholesale’s dedication to keep diabetes self-management affordable helps everyday people maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The American Diabetes Association and The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation do a lot in the way of raising money and awareness for the cure of Diabetes. They help give a voice to those who do not have the means to speak up or speak out. They are there to help raise funds and get donations to fund the research for a cure. That is why we are creating a team for the local ADA Step Out to Fight Diabetes in Fort Lauderdale, FL on October 27, 2007.
We are looking to raise over $2,000 from the individuals on the ADW team. Our employees are not only dedicated to the work that they do in the office; they also show their dedication to Diabetes by volunteering to walk in these local events. It is more than just showing up the day of the walk also, our staff here is also out collecting donations before the event occurs to bring in even more money to donate to the ADA.
By volunteering at these walks and offering supplies at such low costs, we are trying to do everything that we can do to speed up the process of finding a cure, but in the meantime providing the supplies that are needed to keep diabetes self-management affordable.
If you would like to help Team ADW Power Walkers raise the funds to donate to the ADA, follow the link provided and help in the fight to cure Diabetes.

When shopping for a meter, look for one that will best suit your own needs. Find one that is comfortable for you to use and easy to manage. For your convenience, choose a size that is easy to handle. If you have to take it to work or school each day you will want a size that is portable and easy to store. If purchasing for a child you will want to get a meter that is both easy for him or her to use and to read.
There are different features in diabetic meters. Some show a digital reading of the glucose level and some show a color change. If the numbers are hard for you to see, too small or too dim, the color graph may be more convenient. If you have arthritis or cannot see well, find one that is easy to manipulate or look for one that has audio capabilities. A good choice for someone with arthritis is the Bionime Rightest GM300 Blood Glucose Monitoring System. One important thing to look for is the simplicity of use. Many have simple procedures that are only two or three steps from start to finish. Others are more advanced and will speak to you. The Advocate and the Prodigy are excellent for vison impaired diabetics. The Advocate Duo meter has a blood pressure and glucose meter combind in one. This is a great choice for someone who is also checking their bood pressure on a regular basis.
Some new diabetic meters enable you to hook your meter to a computer to record readings. You can keep records and analyze them alone or with your doctor. There are some meters that store the last reading and others that contain enough memory to store hundreds of readings. Some diabetes monitoring devices give an instant reading while others require more time. You basically decide if you need one that is faster than others for your needs.
Find out what kind of batteries a device needs before purchasing it. Some batteries may be hard to find or expensive to replace. If English is not your first language you may be able to find a brand that offers other languages.
If you need any help choosing a meter or would like to know more information on a specific brand please call one of our customer service specialists at 877-241-9002 M-F 9am – 5pm EST. We want you to be aware of all your options before making the investment in your diabetes monitoring system.

How many options are out there? That is the question I asked myself yesterday after speaking with a mother who was calling in for her son who is in the process of changing jobs and will be without insurance for three months. Her son was on an insulin pump and would need the insulin for it. Being a type 1 diabetic myself, around the same age, I would have done the same thing to try to solve the problem as he did. He called his mom and asked her to pay for it. Unfortunately, that was not as easy of an option as it sounds.
There was the possibility of COBRA, which could help in the times between switching jobs. The cost of COBRA also was not within the range. Where and what options is there to go from there?
This situation really hits home for me because I do have Type 1 Diabetes and insurance coverage will be a lifelong adventure for me also. Working for a company like American Diabetes Wholesale makes you feel good about yourself, knowing that I am helping out fellow people with diabetes by being able to offer the supplies they need at such lower costs than any other retail store or Mail Order Company.
It seems like everyday I hear a story about how expensive diabetes is or how it has caused such a financial crisis to be able to self-manage the disease the way it needs to be done. It is terrible that some people are forced to just not test because they can’t afford to pay cash for their supplies.
It is fantastic that there is a company like American Diabetes Wholesale that doesn’t just care about their bottom line, but also about the patient.
