Springtime is always a great time to clean the rugs, upholstery and draperies, but we tend to forget about cleaning and updating something more important, like the old fashioned medicine cabinet. After inhaling an extremely spicy meal, I recently attacked my medicine cabinet at midnight for some Pepto-Bismol tablets to put out the gastric burn. Unfortunately, the tablets expired on 2009. I guess that I am lucky that I have not had a problem since then, yet I went to sleep in misery. I was negligent in updating my over –the –counter medicines and now promise to be better prepared.

Sugar free items or no sugar added items remove the processed sugar (sugar, corn syrup, brown rice syrup, molasses, etc.) and replace it will a slower digesting carbohydrate known as "sugar alcohol”. Some familiar names of sugar alcohols are sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and lactitol. Most of them end in "ol” just like alcohol. These sugar alcohols will still have an impact on your blood sugar, however, because they digest more slowly you may see less of a spike.

The question many people with diabetes ponder is whether to eat sugar free or no sugar added foods. Do they really have less of an impact on glucose levels and can you actually eat more of them than the ordinary sugar foods? The main message to remember is that sugar free means that the sugar is replaced by a slower digesting carbohydrate called a sugar alcohol. To answer the question most accurately try testing your glucose levels before and approximately two hours following a meal or snack and compare the rise from the “sugar free/no sugar added food” to the typical sugar food. You may also try testing before the next meal since the glucose levels may rise more slowly from the sugar alcohol.

For more information on this topic please check out Marci Sloane’s article, Sugar Free or Not?

A new year represents a fresh start for all of us. It is a great time to start the year off on the right foot. January 1st is a date to think of all the things we could improve and begin to implement them. However, after a few months, if that long, reality sets in and we are back to our old habits. With diabetes, not following through on good self care can result in potentially harmful health complications. Now is the time to make a commitment to your health today and for the next 360 days, and beyond. I recommend these essential and easy-to-keep steps for all-year-round care.

In this week’s American Diabetes Wholesale Newsletter, Dr. Forrest Resnikoff gives us some great insights on taking care of our skin during these winter months. This can be especially challenging for those of us managing a diabetic condition, so Dr. Resnikoff offers some suggestions on how to best minimize dryness to avoid skin complications that can be exacerbated by diabetes.

“In many parts of the country winter brings cold weather and a drop in humidity. Skin tends to lose its water by evaporation into this dry environment. This is particularly extreme with aging or with diabetes, when the skin’s oil glands become less productive. Without a barrier of oil the skin can’t prevent this evaporation and is much more prone to becoming dry.”

“The key to avoiding dryness is to keep this water from evaporating from the skin into the air. It is water that moisturizes the skin. Lotions don’t do a very good job of holding this water in the skin because they are made up mostly of water with only a small amount of oil. Creams and ointments are more effective because they have a higher content of oil.”

This article truly contains timely recommendations that everyone can benefit from.
