How Children Could Avoid Type 2 Diabetes | Roberta Kleinman, RN, M.Ed., CDE

September 22nd, 2010 by adw2010

Given the dramatic rise in childhoood obesity in The United States and the associated ailments that come along with the increase in this condition, this week’s American Diabetes Wholesale Newsletter is right on time. In it, Roberta Kleinman, RN (our own “Nurse Robbie”) gives us a glimpse into the width and breadth of this childhood malady that is reaching near-epidemic proportions, without the usual accompanying “scare tactics” that always seem to come along with discussions of this topic.

“Since 1990, type 2 diabetes has doubled in the children/adolescents population.”

“About 2 million adolescents ages 12-19 years old have pre-diabetes.”

“What is more alarming is much of the obesity, type 2 diabetes, early onset of cardiovascular disease and other child health issues IS PREVENTABLE.”

Nurse Robbie’s discussion is filled with some eye-opening statistics, true enough, but she also leaves us with some hope as well, giving some great advice and recommendations for prevention of type 2 diabetes in children.

Exploring The Diabetes & Body Mass Connection | Dr. Fred Vagnini, Board Certified Cardiologist

September 17th, 2010 by adw2010

This week’s American Diabetes Wholesale Newsletter features an interesting discussion of body mass and its direct correlation with pre-diabetes and diabetes. Dr. Fred Vagnini, Board Certified Cardiologist, goes into great detail explaining how carrying unnecessary extra pounds can potentially set one on the path to diabetes. Dr. Vagnini goes on to offer helpful tips and recommendations for reducing body mass.

“First of all, if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, you probably have a series of physiological, sociological and genetic roadblocks getting in your way. For example, overweight people with diabetes are often fatigued which can make it difficult to exercise.”

“Keep moving to get rid of unwanted pounds… Exercise plays an important role as a control mechanism for pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It can literally blast through roadblocks.”

Whether managing a diabetic condition or otherwise, this is a great read and a real motivator for anyone wanting to shed those extra unwanted pounds.

July 14th, 2010 by adw2010

This week’s Newsletter is an eye-opening look at the issue of pre-diabetes in the United States by Roberta Kleinman, RN. “Nurse Robbie” presents us with some sobering statistics on the state of this growing health concern. Pre-diabetes is is a condition where the blood sugar levels are above normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

“Did you know nearly 30% of all adults in the U.S. have pre-diabetes? More than 90% of these 57 million adults aren’t even aware they have pre-diabetes.”

“50% of Americans diagnosed with pre-diabetes do not make changes, such as lowering body mass and exercising, to help avoid full-blown diabetes at a later date.”

Loaded with statistics that may alarm as well as suggestions for lifestyle changes that we all could benefit from, this is a very informative article that will definitely make you think twice about pre-diabetes and all of its warning signs.
