Random Thoughts in the Life of a Diabetic

May 30th, 2008 by Chris S

Another Friday, another week of work finished. I do not want to do anything at all this weekend, I just want to lay in bed and sleep all weekend. I have actually started playing a little bit of playstation again, my girlfriend hates it! She also hates staying inside on the weekends and just being lazy. Oh well. I think I am going to see the Indiana Jones movie this weekend, I can not wait.

I also want to see the new Strangers movie, but I don’t know if I will be able to sleep after seeing something like that. The way the world is now, that could happen any day of the week. What does all this have to do about diabetes? Absolutely nothing. I decided today, I don’t even want to talk about diabetes. Well, I am right now, but this is the end of it, no more. Let’s talk about some of the fun things in life, like the Indiana Jones movie, or Call of Duty 4, or hell even chinese food.

You know what really bugs me? Since I started dieting, Taco Bell (my weakness) started the whole .79 , .89 , .99 campaign and I can’t eat it. I have cut fast food out completly and now they decide to do this. That irritates me. Why does a rain cloud come by and then it clears up and then it starts raining again? Why are there so many dragonflies flying around right now, do they really love the heat that much? Who will win, Celtics or Pistons? I hate Kobe Bryant, but I love watching him play, so I would love to see a Kobe- Richard Hamilton match up, that should be interesting. What’s for dinner tonight, I usually go out to eat on Friday’s, but I don’t know where I want to go.

So, if you all wondered what goes through my head in about a 5 minute span, there you go! Good news everybody, bowling league starts back up this upcoming Monday. You know what the best part of it is, it is a Miller Lite league. If I have never expressed this before, I ONLY drink Miller Lite. My whole apartment is designed in Miller Lite and Eagles stuff. $1 Miller Lite drafts throughout the night also, compared to their usualy $3.50. I am excited!

So, these have been my random thoughts of the Life of a Diabetic

Long Weekend Way Too Short

May 29th, 2008 by Chris S

Even with the holiday, this long weekend was way too short. Friday night’s concert was a success. I tried to position myself in a good way in the lawn thanks to Sara’s comment, but I still couldn’t see anything. Luckily, I knew somebody who lived in the high rise apartments above Mizner Park and could see from there. The concert was only about an hour, but Free Bird rocked the place.

Saturday was a longggg day at the Sawgrass Mills Mall. I went there just to have something to do and when the day was all over, my wallet was empty, surprise surprise. Sunday was a very boring day, but yesterday we had a nice little cookout, but I overate there of course. But the workout regime and diet is back to normal.

Let’s finally talk some diabetes now. I’m still in the process of getting some insurance coverage, but it is tough. I’m also looking for a new house at the same time, I have 63 days before I move out. I am prepared for a long uphill battle and fight!

Diet Has been Semi-Successful

May 22nd, 2008 by Chris S

So far after 2 weeks of dieting I have kept off most of the weight, and I haven’t really gone over 225 in those 2 weeks. I am still not exercising as much as I would like to be, but I am getting there, baby steps. I am running on Tuesday and Thursdays, playing tennis on Wednesday’s and attempting to play a round of golf every weekend. I am pretty ashamed of myself that I can’t even run a full mile anymore without taking a break, talk about being out of shape.

So, that is why I say it has been semi-successful, because the weight hasn’t been pouring off because of not exercising. I have cut down my calorie intake to about 1,200, slowly I will get it down to 1,000 and then burn off 300 exercising. Right now the late night snacking is what is hurting me, literally, because I am waking up with 400 blood sugars because it seems that my body can’t break down sugar while I am sleeping, even with a 2.0 basal on the pump.

Sorry so short on the post today, but lots of things to get done today.

A1C Results Finally

May 22nd, 2008 by Chris S

Finally after 4 1/2 months I went to get my bloodwork done. Everything was good except for the most important part. The A1C was 7.6. My cholesterol numbers were perfect and something else was a little high because of the bad eating habits and weight I had put on over the last several months. But that should be fine by the next time I get it done because I have already lost 7 pounds in about a week. This is just because those 7 pounds were just excess weight that had no reason to be there. The new articles coming out about the junk in the trunk being better then a muffin top makes you feel good when you ask if your butt looks fat in your jeans.

Back to my A1C, it was a little elevated, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be with all these morning high levels. If I could regulate my levels from 3:00 a.m. - to about 8:00 a.m., I bet my A1C would be about 6.5 - 6.7. That is my main goal, maybe I should try more sleep, like falling asleep before 1 a.m. I have also cut out eating after 11:00 p.m., and will eventually cut that down to 10, but I can’t just go cold turkey on it.

Time to go, I will be going to the movies tonight, What Happens In Vegas.

A Perfectly Healthy Meal Wasted

May 21st, 2008 by Chris S

You know what I love? I love when I spend 45 minutes the night before to make a very healthy meal for lunch the next day and you’re very excited about it because you are dieting and then you put it in a nice bag and set it out on the counter right in front of the front door so you can take to work and enjoy the delicious perfect meal you prepared…

And then walk out the front door and forget it on your counter! I just love when I do that. Especially when it’s chicken and you turn your air off to save money during the day while you’re not home, so its spoiled when you get home and you just have to throw it away. So a perfectly healthy meal wasted, in the garbage. Doesn’t that just brighten your day when it happens to you. So, as I’m sure you can tell, thats what I did today, so I went to lunch with a co-worker and was good and ate soup and salad, so I was still proud of myself. But as I am typing this and it is almost dinner time, I am extremely hungry and my stomach is growling.

But first, I am going to go play tennis and get a nice little work out and then eat some good food.

Stress, Stress, Stress, Study, School, and A1C

April 28th, 2008 by Chris S

A1C test tomorrow morning, 11 a.m. My guess is a little higher then last time, right around…. 7.8 I am going to say. Mainly because of all the high mornings that I have had. I am starting today, to see how long I can go without getting a reading of over 200, and then if I do go over, I want to minimize them and see if I can get less then 3 for the whole week. I don’t see it happening though, because I’m lucky to get less then 2 a day.

I’m starting to realize that Olive Garden messes with my blood sugars a lot like pizza does almost. Maybe it’s because I eat about 4 large bowls of salad just by myself. Sometimes I order pasta, but sometimes it is just soup, but this past time I went, it was pasta also. It doesn’t spike until about an hour or so later.

I have a new stressful part of my life, I need only one class to graduate, and I signed up for it to be online, well they cancelled that one. Next, I signed up for another one and then I receive an e-mail today that the class is two students short of the minimum summer requirement, so now I have to stress and worry if that class is going to get cancelled also. What a stressful event.

Another Monday, Another Diet…. and a Weird Diabetic Movie!

April 21st, 2008 by Chris S

My diet has started again today, because its Monday. But seriously, this time, I am sticking to it. At least hardcore for two weeks before my parents come to visit me for vacation, then it will not be as serious. Even when they come down, I can still eat healthier and get a salad here and there when we go out to dinner instead of fast food all the time. Yesterday I made my lunches for the whole week that way I won’t go out and buy lunch, even though I will still be tempted to because my co-workers are very tempting when lunch time comes around.

To update you all on the bowling situation, we finished 1 point behind the first place team, which really irritated me. We were tied for second going into the night, and the other second place team had the tie breaker against us, so they bowled the 1st placed and we bowled the 3rd place. So we had to rely on the other team to beat the 1st place team, and they didn’t. We did our part by winning all 3 games, not just winning, humiliating them. Each game we won by over 150 pins!!!

There was also a lot of catered food because it was the final night. So guess who just kept on eating and eating and eating all night long. Pasta, chicken fingers, salad, wings, and 2 pitchers of Miller Lite. I did not have my meter (what a surprise!) and took a guess on how much insulin I would need. At the end of the night when I went to the car and found my meter in there, I tested and I was around 98. I was shocked, especially since I was really pissed off.

Over the weekend, I was flipping through the channels and came across this movie that was about these aliens that needed a lot of sugar to reproduce and they were nurses in a hospital. These nurses would seduce men and, even women, and suck the glucose out of their body. Well, what do you know there was a diabetic in the movie and as she was running from the aliens, she lost her insulin. Later in the movie her sugar was really high and the aliens could sense it. She went on a mission to find more insulin in the hospital and she came up with the bright idea of shooting the aliens with the insulin to kill them. By this time, I am feeling like I am in a bad crazy dream, but I wasn’t, this was really a movie. A weird, unique one, that made the diabetic the hero in the end.

April 11th, 2008 by Chris S

Ouch! Sunburn, but I like the way it looks. Finally, this past Saturday it was actually nice and I got to go to the beach. Then yesterday I had a half day of work to catch up on school work, so I took my book out by the pool and took advantage of the weather. I hope this weekend it is cold at night because I am going “camping.” I put the word in quotes because it’s not like some real nature trail camping, its sleeping in a tent, but cooking with a grill, and having a real bathroom, and all the good things of being at home.

The diet is done already, I made it to Tuesday night, not bad, 2 days this week. I will have some time to work out starting next week. My parents are visiting in less then a month, so I know I will be eating very unhealthy while they are here. I’m very excited for them to come, plus I finish up my finals a few days before that, and the summer class I am taking is online, so I never have to go back to a classroom again!!!

And sorry, but no bowling and blogging Friday tomorrow. Maybe a camping and blogging.

Hoping my A1C Test Turns Out as Good as JDRF Walk

April 3rd, 2008 by Chris S

The JDRF walk this past Saturday was great. There were so many people there, probably close to about 3,000. With the minimum donation being about $100, that had to be a great outcome. Now it’s time to start collecting for the ADA walks later this year. I’ll be holding some local fundraisers for different events in the area, so if you live in the south Florida region, keep up with the posts because there may be things you want to help out with.

I’ve been controlling my eating habits the past couple of days, and my sugars have been more stable. I am trying hard to fight the hunger problems. Yogurt has been the most frequented food, and yogurt smoothies. I played tennis the other day for about 10 minutes because I caught up with my girlfriend and her mom when they were just finishing and tired out.

A1C test is next week, hopefully it turns out well as well as the JDRF walk did!
