Birthday Celebration

June 29th, 2007 by Chris S

Should I eat that piece of cake?  Well, maybe I shouldn’t because there is too much sugar, but it just looks so good.  This was my dilemma last night because of it being my girlfriend’s birthday.  After eating an enormous amount of pasta with chicken parmesan, which wasn’t the best of ideas either, I was well over my normal intake level or carbs.  But after we got back home, there was a delicious chocolate chip cookie cake with beautiful red, white, and blue frosting all over it.  How could I pass this thing up?

So at about 7:00, my sugar level was 133, and that’s when I decided the cake was ready for me to eat.  After enjoying one of the most tasteful things in my entire life, I tested my sugar again at about 9:00, which was now around 220.  Well now the decision to eat cake wasn’t looking as good as it was a few hours ago.  Luckily I am on the pump and the correction was very quick and easy to handle with no injections.  Finally, at about 11:00, my sugar level was back to normal at 115.

This is just one of the tough decisions that I, as a diabetic, must make every time there is a birthday or some sort of celebration.  Should I or should I not eat that delicious looking cake, and if I do, how much should I eat?  My personal decision is to go ahead and splurge on a piece of cake every now and then, but portion control is the key for me.  I will have that piece of cake, small piece albeit, but I will need to cut some carbs and calories out of my diet in other places.  Please leave any comments if you have any similar experiences, I would love to see how other diabetics deal with this issue also.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Insulin Pump

June 28th, 2007 by Chris S

What is it?  How does it work?  Does it hurt?  What am I getting myself into??!!!???  These were all the things that flew through my head when I heard the mention of using an insulin pump.  The first thing that drew my attention was, it meant I didn’t have to an insulin pen every single time I ate and no more syringe with Lantus at night before bedtime.  After doing extensive research on the pump, I decided to go on the pump for good.  And it was the best decision I ever made.

I was 20 when I first went on the pump.  It was scary at first, learning all the buttons and what exactly the pump can do, but it became my new best friend.  I now no longer needed to go into the bathroom before eating dinner in order to take a shot of insulin from my pen.  I can now stay at the table and just hit a few buttons on the pump, and insulin pumps into my body.

So, my advice to anybody who is contemplating going on the pump, do some research on the style of pump you will be using and the best way to understand it, is by talking to somebody who is using it now.  I am here to help you with any questions that you would have about being on the pump.

Managing Blood Sugars

June 27th, 2007 by Chris S

One of the most difficult tasks for not only newly diagnosed diabetics, but all diabetics in general, is being able to properly manage their blood sugars.  Being an active 22 year old full time college student and also working a part time job, I find that sometimes I just feel like I don’t have any time to test my blood sugar.  Even though that I know the key to managing your diabetes and staying healthy is by making sure you are testing your blood sugars so you can adjust throughout the day.

Some other diabetics run into other problems when it comes to managing their blood sugars, whether it be that they can’t afford test strips, a meter, or just do not have the correct diabetic education.  There are plenty of resources online that can help diabetics solve these issues.  For additional information on these resources, please follow the links under my Blogroll.

Stay safe and remember to test, test, test, and test again.

When it comes to your blood sugars, TEST, DO NOT GUESS.

Welcome

June 25th, 2007 by Chris S

Living a life with diabetes can be fun, happy, sad, frustrating, or wonderful, just like the life of everybody else. Although we do face several challenges on a daily basis, those challenges do not have to make life miserable or unhappy. When I first became diagnosed, thats the way I thought life was going to be from now on. Pricking my finger 5 times a day, taking shots at every meal, not being able to enjoy sugary foods anymore, the thoughts of this gave me nightmares my first few nights in the hospital. After now living with diabetes for over 4 years now, I realized all those nightmares were just that, nightmares. I have not had to many things in my life. Playing sports is no problem like I thought it would be. Sugary desserts?, No problem, I find sugar-free desserts even better. My blog will continue to give you everyday situations that can and will arise in the life of a diabetic. Please, if at anytime you have any questions about difficulties, and how to overcome then, post a comment and I will be happy to help in any way that I can.
