No time to test

July 19th, 2007 by Chris S

The past couple of weeks have been so busy and stressful.  It seems like I don’t even have time to take a break to eat, which also means, I feel like taking time to test my sugar is going to put me behind my schedule.  College finals, studying for my real estate licensing exam, time with my lovely girlfriend, work, volunteering….. where is there time to test?

Although I know it only takes less than a minute to test, when I think about doing it, it seems like it is going to take me forever.  I know I need to do it more often, I hear from the doc, and especially from momma dukes.  I know there are plenty of other busy diabetics out there.  How do you all find the time to test?

Please comment and let me know.

I used to have this problem a lot in college. It also led me to my highest A1C to date – 9.2.

I started testing more often by setting my insulin pump to alarm at pre-set times of the day. A couple times in the morning, lunch, a couple times in the afternoon and evening, and then around the time I usually go to bed. Ended up with 7 alarms, and I tested for almost all of them. Of course, sometimes things change and you eat earlier, so then you don’t need to test when the alarm goes off, but it at least stops and reminds you to think about when the last time you tested was. If you can’t do it with your insulin pump, try it with your cell phone.

Allison is right on with her advice, Chris. You know how important it is to test and test often (no less than 4 times a day), so I won’t go into that.

Another alarm you could set up is in your e-mail program (if you use Outlook or something like that).

Take care, man. You are too important to too many people…
