Cough, Cough Go Away

November 30th, 2007 by Chris S

I have a cough, that is the most annoying thing ever.  I start and I just cant stop and then when I do stop it just tickels and annoys my throat.  I bought the wrong Halls, so they help for a while, but then it goes away and stops.

I didn’t realize how much sugar was in these cough drops until I saw that they made sugar free ones.  Which are just as good by the way.  I just want the cough to go away because I know I am going to get it again, along with the wonderful sinus congestion I always get when I go back home to Pennsylvania for Christmas.

Also, this weekend is HUGE for the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Philadelphia Eagles.  Va Tech plays Boston College in the ACC Championship game this weekend, which is a must win.  Then on Sunday the Eagles play the Seahawks, which is also another must win game.

This weekend during the games I am going to check my blood pressure throughout because I know that it is very very stressful when I watch those games.  My blood sugar numbers are all over the place, sometimes I get heat flashes.  My girlfriend does not like how these games affect me.  I can feel my heart racing at times, such as Sunday night, Patriots - 31 Eagles - 28, Eagles driving down the field to score, and…… INTERCEPTION.  My heart rate definitely was not the same as it was earlier in the day.

So, with the cough, the big games, no sleep because finals, this is going to be an interesting weekend, with a lot of testing.

I Was Thankful for No High Blood Sugars on Thanksgiving

November 26th, 2007 by Chris S

What a crazy, crazy holiday weekend.  I have not even looked at a computer screen for almost 5 days.  That’s pretty nice though, to not have to worry about e-maill after e-mail.  Anyway, this was my 4th Thanksgiving after being diagnosed, and the first I did not have a blood sugar level over 200 at all on Thanksgiving day.

At 9:30 p.m Thanksgiving night, I decided to camp out in front of Circuit City for the nice 50″ television for about $800.  I stayed up all night long, and my sugars weren’t that bad then either.  They were all over the place, but not too high and not too low.  I had a lot of candy with me though because I knew it was going to be a long wait in the line to check out.  And it was, over an hour in line waiting, and did not get the television I wanted anyway.

And on a final note, as I said in my last post, I said that my Eagles would beat the Patriots, and in my mind, we did.  We had the game won, and we lost that game, they did not beat us, we beat ourselves.

Finally, A pizza that is “diabetic friendly”

November 21st, 2007 by Chris S

I came across this little article this morning that talks about a pizzaria in Tacoma, WA that makes a whole wheat pizza dough.  I know there are other places out there that must do the same thing, I just have not heard of any yet.

The pizza was inspired by a young kid who wanted to know if there was anything in the pizza place to eat, but unfortunately there was not.  So the owner created this pizza for him.  This is such a wonderful story of a local small business owner doing what he can to help the fight against Diabetes.

There needs to be more action taken like this.  The more people who pick up against the fight the better off the whole world will be.  The diabetes epidemic is starting to get out of control, and the publicity is not at the level that it needs to be at.  I respect breast cancer, and Aids, and malnutrition, but Diabetes is not as well known, and it should be.

I give thanks to all of the fellow d-bloggers who give all of us a voice in the world, and together we will all make a difference in the world of Diabetes

Thanksgiving Dinner Tips for People with Diabetes.

November 16th, 2007 by Chris S

Thanksgiving dinner, I cannot wait.  I am trying to drop about 5-7 pounds before Thanksgiving rolls around because I know I will put on close to that amount on that day.  I have been reading over so many tips for a diabetes Thanksgiving, and some of them are good, but then some I know are just unrealistic for me.

One of the things I can do is bring my own sugar free dessert that way I know for a fact there will be something sugar free for me.  Well I am not a big dessert fan anyway, good thing since I’m not supposed to be eating them.

Some other websites I read says to eat before you go to the big meal.  Why would I want to eat something before Thanksgiving dinner, thats why its Thanksgiving, its a one time a year event that I want to eat that special food.  And a lot of it.

Well, if anybody has some other tips on how I can enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner without having to worry about all kinds of crazy stuff, please let me know.  My idea is to just make sure I have A LOT of insulin.  I have some pens for emergencies when the pump is not working, so maybe I can use those.

Happy World Diabetes Day!

November 14th, 2007 by Chris S

Happy World Diabetes Day everybody.  It feels good to have a day that I am actually part of.  It is great to honor our veterans on Veterans day and Memorial day, but it’s great to spread the word about Diabetes too.

It is an accomplishment to have this day, but there still needs to be more.  If Diabetes could get half the attention and publicity that breast cancer receives, we could educate so many more people and possibly prevent the diagnosis of so many more Diabetics.

But enough about that, today for me is to celebrate my Diabetes.  I am proud to be a diabetic, its part of who I am.  It has made me stronger, responsible, mentally tough, and mature well beyond my years.  Yes, my life has changed since the day I was diagnosed, but this is for sure, I control my Diabetes, it doesn’t control me.

So for all of you who are trying to spread the word of Diabetes, its complications, preventions, fundraising, dieting, whatever it is you are doing on your World Diabetes Day, I thank you.

My Eagles are messing with my health

November 12th, 2007 by Chris S

Yesterday was the largest flucation of blood sugar levels and I could feel my heart racing, and then slowing down and racing again.  We do good, we do bad, and then good and then bad.  Sometimes it is tough to handle and my nerves are going crazy and my blood sugar goes up, so I take just a little to cover because I know it will settle itself once we start winning again.

High blood pressure does run in my family, and I have a feeling I should start checking mine in the middle of games because I would really like to see how much it is changing through the course of a single game.  Next week won’t be a good time to do it because we play the Dolphins, and well if we lose that game, then it will be sky high for sure.  The following week is the Patriots WHO WE WILL BEAT!.

Anyway, I didn’t test my goal amounts over the weekend because I was super busy,  but I know that is still no excuse at all.

But it is a happy Monday, Donovan McNabb played well, we beat the Redskins, the Giants lost, only disappointing thing is that the Cowgirls won and Terrel Owens played well.  Ya know, TO is kind of like sugar to a diabetic.  Too much of it can be unhealthy and bad for you!

Happy Monday!

I’m back from Vacation, and not a good A1C number

November 7th, 2007 by Chris S

Hello everybody!! I’m finally back from vacation and back in Florida.  I had an eventful and busy week.  First night I was home, I took two of my nieces out trick-or-treating, and I didn’t eat any of their candy.  OK, maybe 1-2 pieces.  The next day was my birthday, so my family and some friends went out to happy hour and they had the servers sing happy birthday to me and bring a brownie sundae, which was amazing.

The next day was finally a day to relax and just hang out and do some stuff around town.  Friday was the rehearsal dinner, and also the Pizza Hut buffet that I promised my girlfriend and niece I would take them to.  I didn’t over over eat, so my sugars stayed in good shape.

Saturday was the wedding and the reception, which a lot of Miller Lite was consumed, but once again my sugars were in great shape.

The main concern was my A1C number that neither my doctor nor I liked too much.  It was 7.6!  The previous was 7.1.  I had a feeling it would be kind of high because of all the highs I was having in the morning.  But I changed some basal rates, and I think it may be solved because I have been waking up in the low 100’s again, finally!

I started my diet and some better  glucose monitoring this week, and so far so good.  I told my girlfriend that for too long I have been acting as a “part-time” diabetic, which I can not do any longer.  So I have tested nearly 30 times since Monday afternoon, which could have been the same I did in a month in the past.
