Ignorance is Bliss

July 24th, 2008 by Chris S

Lack of diabetes knowledge, thats what I want to talk about today.  There are a lot of people that don’t know what diabetes is, they heard of it, but don’t know what it means.  With there being more people with diabetes then just about any other disease, you would think people would have more knowledge about it, unfortunately they don’t.  For instance, when speaking to somebody yesterday i said I was diabetic and they replied back with, “Oh, I’m sorry to hear.”  So I replied back like any normal diabetic would, “Sorry?  Sorry for what?  Theres nothing to be sorry about, I can manage my diabetes, it doesn’t control my life.”

Also, I went to an ADA kick-off breakfast this morning and I always leave these type of events, extremely motivated to start testing more often.  Which also makes me think about the hard work these people do to spread awareness, and the ignorance of people who just don’t care.  I am coming up on my next A1C test, I have to get it done before my insurance runs out.  Is there anybody out there who has to pay for this testing out of pocket, how much does it run usually?

Also, I would like some feedback from my…. very few readers.  I come in every morning and have about 20-30 comments, but they are all spam.  I would like to have some more interesting material that people would want to comment on and make my blog a little better.  I am still some what new to the blogging, well I’ve been around for a year now.

Finally, it’s coming around the end of the subscription of one of my magazines and I want to start getting some more diabetes related ones, any suggestions from any of you?

I don’t pay out of pocket for the A1c. But I think the bigger cost is for the phlebotomist- whoever draws the blood will probably charge you 15-90 dollars, and then the A1c itself runs 15-60 dollars. You can get a home check kit through the mail, it’s a fingerprick thing, I think, and costs 30-40 dollars before tax. Search home A1c.

Thank you first off. I have done the A1C home test kit before, and it worked fine. I actually only paid about 15-20 bucks for mine. I just have to get the whole 9 yards on this next blood work, so that’s what I am worried about. But the cholestorol and A1C I can get for low prices from the company I get all my supplies I have to pay out of pocket for. I’m pretty covered with them, just the whole lipid panel is what I think is more expensive.

    Thanks.

I have used two diffferent home AlC tests, both on the day of a ab draw, and both were off by at least a full point. Money down the drain, as far as I’m concerned.
My favorite Magazine is Diabetes Self-Management - very good articles on a variety of subjects. I used o get Forecast but find it be sort of”empty” these last couple of years.
