Good Diet and Good News on NEw Pump

January 26th, 2009 by Chris S

This weekend didn’t hurt my diet too bad.  It didn’t help, but it also didn’t hurt, which I will take that as a victory!  I am down 15 pounds since the beginning of the year, but still nowhere near where I’d like to be.  My blood sugars are in good ranges, but not great where I want them to be.  The morning highs are only there when I eat past 10 p.m. and stay up later then 1 a.m (which usually causes me to eat later)  I have had no other diabetes related issues or problems, so I don’t really have much diabetes stuff to talk about.

So, I guess that makes me normal like everybody else. Oh wait, I just did remember something.  I got approved for a new pump.  I was using the older Medtronic 715, and just got approved for the 722, so that means the next step is to start using the CGMS.  I have heard different opinions, but I would like to try out this one along with the Navigator.

Well I will let you all know the updates of the CGMS!

JDRF Kick Off Meeting

January 23rd, 2009 by Chris S

Yesterday I attended the local JDRF Greater West Palm Beach Chapter’s kick-off luncheon.  The walk is on Saturday, March 28 in Boca Raton.  The luncheon was amazing.  The food was great, the planning was great, the speeches were great, everything about it was great!  I can’t wait to start fundraising and making some money.  These walks are a lot of fun, and I hope a lot of people show up this year.

After the lunch I ate there yesterday, I came back to work and my blood sugar was over 300.  So as motivated as I was after I left there to manage better, I must have miscalculated on the amount of insulin I needed.

Well it is lunch time and I just tested and my sugar is 78, so I better go grab something quickly.

Good day ya’ll

Tacos Ruined My Diet…and Lossed 3 days of Insulin

January 21st, 2009 by Chris S

Well the $0.20 tacos from Taco Bell last night really put a damper in my diet.  After I got done eating I went right to the gym and worked out for a good hour, but still there is no making up for that.  That means nothing but salads for me for the rest of the week.  Even after eating the tacos last night my blood sugars were still at pretty good levels.  My sugars are almost perfect while working out now.  I guess its the new basal strategy that I have started using for the hour that I work out.

I can now run a little longer then I could a couple of weeks ago, but I still don’t think it is enough for me to go out and start trying to play basketball again.  Basketball is a different type of being in shape though.  You can run for miles but still get tired during basketball.  I wanted to go out and play some golf this weekend because football is finally over, sad sad sad, but the weather down here in Florida is getting too cold for me.  I came out this morning and it was 42 degrees, not why I moved to Florida.  However, I do like it to be right around 55-65, that’s perfect weather.

Well, before I leave, let me tell you about the frustrating thing that happened this morning.  As I was filling my reservoir with insulin this morning, it was almost full and the plunger decided to fall out and all the insulin fell out all over my floor and hands.  And insulin is not the best smelling stuff in the world.  But I was so pissed that I just lost 3 days of insulin.  And it reminded me to follow up with the insulin company to get my refill.

Disappointing Day

January 19th, 2009 by Chris S

Today is a disappointing day, because I had expected to be celebrating a trip to the Super Bowl, however that is not happening.  It was a season filled with ups and downs, and mainly ups towards the end of the season.  I know all of the Philadelphia papers today are going to be tearing Donovan and Andy apart, but I will not do so because Donovan kept the team in the game.  But this is not a sports blog, so that is all I will speak about today.  However, now it’s time to GO Magic, Panthers, and Michigan State!

I had a pretty high sugar yesterday because my insulin was leaking and I didn’t even know it.  Starting to get accustomed to this.  I lose a lot of insulin because of this happeneing, but luckily I spot it very quickly.  I took out my infusion set last night and just used my pen to fix the high and then put in a new infusion set.  When I woke up this morning, I was still a little high, but not as bad as I was when the insulin was leaking.

I didn’t break my diet as bad yesterday as I did the last 2 weekends of football, so my weight is still off and didn’t really gain anything over the weekend.  I don’t know if I will work out tonight because there is a Panthers game, and if I don’t work out on Monday’s, then it seems the whole week is shot.  If I am really dedicated to this diet, I will work out after the game.

Well you all have a great day!

Sick and Still Working Out

January 13th, 2009 by Chris S

I was very proud of myself last night.  I was really sick with a bad sore throat, but I sucked it up and still went to the gym.  And I worked out pretty hard too.  I went with my roommate and we worked out together and burned off close to 500 calories in our 45 minutes there.  I am confident that if we stick to this work out schedule, that I will have no problem dropping the weight I wanted to.  The sore throat was burning when I started to run and was breathing heavy.  My body was already aching because of the cold, but then the workout didn’t help too much.

My sugars have been a lot better while working out.  Previously I was taking my pump off while I worked out for 30 minutes, and they would go high afterwards.  So then I tried taking the pump off while running or riding the bike because it was uncomfortable, still went high.  So, now I wear the pump the whole time I work out.  I even wore it the other night when I played tennis, which sucked because I then only had 1 pocket to put tennis balls in, so I had to bend over more to get them and go retrieve them more often.  My CDE should be happy with the results of my next bloodwork and also the weight I report back to her.  I have to upload my blood sugars to the computer so she can see them, I give her the averages, but I’d like to let her see all the numbers.

Well, you all have a wonderful Tuesday.

Ups and Downs of the weekend

January 12th, 2009 by Chris S

What a great weekend for sports, but a horrible weekend for the diet.  All the hard work during the week is gone!  I was able to get myself down about 7 pounds or so, and it seems that I put more then half of that back on over the weekend.  First on Saturday I had the Panthers game, and of course I got the nachos and double cheese like I said I wasn’t going to.  Then Sunday was the big Eagles game, which I had hot dog, after hot dog, after hot dog.  The good part about it though was that I was eating the low fat, turkey dogs and they are half the calories as the regular hot dogs that everyone else was eating.  But the nachos supreme I made for everybody (which it seemed I was the only one to eat) was not a big help either.

Overall though my sugars were good throughout the weekend and the Eagles beat the Giants, how much better can it get?  Well I know how it  can be better, celebrating in Tampa, but thats a few weeks away.  I promised all my friends that are Giants and Cowboys fans that I would not talk trash, but damn it feels good to end both of their seasons!

Back to the diabetes related stuff.  I will be back on the strict diet and work out plan today.  I kept it up pretty good during the week, but now I need to hold up the other end of it on the weekend.  Salads and salads only on the weekend, that’s it.  Well I hope everyone has a great start to the week and nobody has a case of the Mondays!

Big Game, Big Calorie Intake

January 8th, 2009 by Chris S

Big game tonight and that means one thing.  Too many calories!  There might not be as much as normal, because I am feeling a little sick and have a big time headache.  I ate the same lunch as I have been this whole week, but I was going to try and skip lunch to make up for the calories for tonight, but there is no way I could do that, and it’s not too wise to skip a meal.  Even though I live in Florida, I will NOT be cheering for the Gators tonight, Go Sooners!

On another note, the diet is doing pretty good so far.  I’m about 6-7 pounds lighter then when I started dieting last week.  This is just excess weight that I knew would be able to burn off pretty easily, but it is keeping it off that is the hard part.  I am already starting to crave a nice big cheeseburger and especially Taco Bell.  If I go to Taco Bell, I will put that 6-7 pounds right back on in one meal.

This weekend is the first Panthers game I will be able to go to in almost 2 months.  I used to get an order of nachos and cheese when I went to the game, but not anymore.  I will bring peanuts or something of the such to snack on, definitely not hitting up those nachos.  I will probably just take a granola bar and have that as a snack.  Also since the dieting began, the blood sugars have been at amazing levels.  90 pre-meal, 130-140 post meal.  I have been having more lows lately, but Gatorade has been my cure for that.  Hope everyone is having a great start to their 2009 so far!

Sore After Gym

January 7th, 2009 by Chris S

Wow, am I sore from exercising or what!  Last night was my first night of going all out at the gym.  Last week was just a warm up, but then this week I put the real weights on and went at it.  I also tried a new warm up.  Usually I would drive to the gym, 0.5 miles from my house and then do 15 minutes on the bike to warm-up and then drive back home.  This time, I did it a little different.  I ran to the gym for my warm-up, lifted and then ran back home.  The run to the gym was brutal, but the run back home was easy as could be.

I am having less and less time to go to the gym, but after last night,  I will definitely continue to make time.  My diet has been good so far this week.  I have cut my calorie intake in half, but I am still filling up on food, which keeps expanding my stomach.  I ate a lot of salad yesterday and had only crackers with fat free french onion dip with a little hot sauce.  Hot sauce and crackers are the key.  Hot sauce speeds up the metabolism, and crackers make you think you’re stuffed when you’re really not.

Down 2 pounds so far this week.

Good BG Level Weekend….Kinda

January 5th, 2009 by Chris S

What a weekend it was.  I accomplished a lot this weekend, and did it all with pretty good blood sugars.  There was however about a 3 hour period this weekend that my sugar went close to 400, and that was during the Eagles game.  It wasn’t because it was a close game or anything like that.  It was when Brian Westbrook took the screen pass 70+ yards for a touchdown, and when I jumped up screaming, my infusion set came out, and I didn’t even know it.  This just so happened to be right around the time that the chicken tacos (Taco Bell boxed stuff, since the diet doesn’t allow me to eat at Taco Bell).  The infusion set wasn’t fully out, but enough to where the insulin leaked out.  And it wasn’t until later on when I tested my sugar and saw the high number that I realized it.  But, I fixed it pretty quickly.  Other then that, it was a good BG level weekend.

I even went to the gym on Saturday morning and rode the bike and lifted.  That was the first time that I went to the gym on a weekend since I was probably in high school.  I felt pretty good all day long then too, so I will try to keep doing it.  I am still trying to get myself to go to the gym in the morning before work, but it is tough to do, because I am not a morning person.  The weekend was fine because it was at like 10:30 – 11, so I wasn’t too tired.  If I went before work, then I would have to go at like 6:30 – 7, not so attractive.  The weight is slowly coming off, it has been 2 pounds since I came back from Christmas vacation, so 2 pounds in one week.  I was hoping to burn off a little more then that at the beginning.  My eating habits have not been as strict, but I am slowly getting better.  The weekends are still hurting me a bit.

But, this week is going to be a good one!
