This is week 6 of the Miller Lite Fun league, and so far it has been no far at all, being whooped every week. This weekend was a crazy one. Witnessed two fights on Friday at the bar we were at by the beach waiting for the fireworks. The fireworks sparked by people on the patio bar were better then real fireworks. Two different fights right next to us broke out and and security came and had to break things up. It was great. Drunk kids, I tell ya, dress ‘em up but ya can’t take them out!
Anyway, my parents will be coming down here in less than a month, along with my brother and his wife. They will be coming down for my graduation. I can’t wait to just get that over with, if it was up to me I wouldn’t even walk, I am just doing it for my mom. I need to make sure I have some skittles or some other candy with me to make sure that I don’t get a really bad low in the middle of the ceremony. That would not be good.
My morning sugars are still really out of whack and it is really starting to scare me. I can’t get these down for anything, and it is becoming a bad situation. I am happy when I wake up with a blood sugar between 200-300! This is ridiculous, but I have tried so many different things.
Any suggestions, please help!

My next A1C visit is not for another month and a half, but I actually feel pretty confident about this one now. Other then all the highs in the morning, there haven’t been too many during the day, so I think I will hit my record low, which shouldn’t be too hard to beat because I think the record low is right around 7.3, nothing to brag about. I am still working that morning low, but man is it taking forever to figure out. I don’t have good sleep patterns, so it is tough to test at 3 a.m., because some nights I’m not going to bed until then, so I probably ate something after midnight, then some nights I fall asleep earlier and haven’t eaten. So, everything varies way too much.
This weekend I am going back out to look at some more new potential places to live. Last week I went looking for individual home, but this week I am looking at more townhouses, condos and apartment complexes. I am going with my actual roomate this weekend instead of just my girlfriend (who is my roomate’s sister), weird huh? He’s not really ready to sign into a lease, but I know we need to soon because our move in date is mid-August, and these nice places will be rented out right away.
Well, no fun plans for me this weekend, although my girlfriend may be getting a new tattoo, so I guess that makes it exciting for me also! What are all of your feelings on diabetics and tattoos, I have heard its not good for you, but then again I know some diabetics all tatted up! I’m thinking about a Philadelphia Eagles tat.

Managing my diabetes is for sure a full time job. Except this one, I don’t get paid for. It takes a lot to fully manage this stuff. Testing the blood sugar is the easy part, but reading a number off of a machine has nothing to do with management to me. Trying to eat healthy every single day is the hardest part. It’s no fun when you drive by Taco Bell and you can’t even pull through the drive thru and buy anything because you’re trying to lose 20 lbs to become healthier.
Yesterday at the bowling alley, I was proud of myself, I only had a little bit of popcorn, and a few Miller Lite beers to wash it all down. All night long I bowled higher then my blood sugar. I don’t know if it was good control, or just good bowling, with a 3 game average of 165. This is a fun league, which bowling is always fun, but I also take it seriously because there is a lot of money on the line here. Last night we were playing a team who was just there for the $1 drafts, and they were using our personal balls that we have paid for and cleaned and had holes drilled for our own fingers, so it was very irritating.
So a little update on me waking up high every morning. I can say that because I am diabetic, but it seems that if I eat peanut butter in some sort of way at night, it controls my levels and doesn’t take me too high. But that doesn’t mean I can eat 5 PB&J sandwiches, it means that I eat an english muffin with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on each side and a small glass of milk. Makes me go to sleep easier also.
Well, just another day in the Life of a Diabetic!

So far after 2 weeks of dieting I have kept off most of the weight, and I haven’t really gone over 225 in those 2 weeks. I am still not excercising as much as I would like to be, but I am getting there, baby steps. I am running on Tuesday and Thursdays, playing tennis on Wednesday’s and attempting to play a round of golf every weekend. I am pretty ashamed of myself that I can’t even run a full mile anymore without taking a break, talk about being out of shape.
So, that is why I say it has been semi-successful, because the weight hasn’t been pouring off because of not exercising. I have cut down my calorie intake to about 1,200, slowly I will get it down to 1,000 and then burn off 300 excercising. Right now the late night snacking is what is hurting me, literally, because I am waking up with 400 blood sugars because it seems that my body can’t break down sugar while I am sleeping, even with a 2.0 basal on the pump.
Sorry so short on the post today, but lots of things to get done today.

Finally after 4 1/2 months I went to get my bloodwork done. Everything was good except for the most important part. The A1C was 7.6. My cholesterol numbers were perfect and something else was a little high because of the bad eating habits and weight I had put on over the last several months. But that should be fine by the next time I get it done because I have already lost 7 pounds in about a week. This is just because those 7 pounds were just excess weight that had no reason to be there. The new articles coming out about the junk in the trunk being better then a muffin top makes you feel good when you ask if your butt looks fat in your jeans.
Back to my A1C, it was a little elevated, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be with all these morning high levels. If I could regulate my levels from 3:00 a.m. - to about 8:00 a.m., I bet my A1C would be about 6.5 - 6.7. That is my main goal, maybe I should try more sleep, like falling asleep before 1 a.m. I have also cut out eating after 11:00 p.m., and will eventually cut that down to 10, but I can’t just go cold turkey on it.
Time to go, I will be going to the movies tonight, What Happens In Vegas.

A1C test tomorrow morning, 11 a.m. My guess is a little higher then last time, right around…. 7.8 I am going to say. Mainly because of all the high mornings that I have had. I am starting today, to see how long I can go without getting a reading of over 200, and then if I do go over, I want to minimize them and see if I can get less then 3 for the whole week. I don’t see it happening though, because I’m lucky to get less then 2 a day.
I’m starting to realize that Olive Garden messes with my blood sugars a lot like pizza does almost. Maybe it’s because I eat about 4 large bowls of salad just by myself. Sometimes I order pasta, but sometimes it is just soup, but this past time I went, it was pasta also. It doesn’t spike until about an hour or so later.
I have a new stressful part of my life, I need only one class to graduate, and I signed up for it to be online, well they cancelled that one. Next, I signed up for another one and then I receive an e-mail today that the class is two students short of the minimum summer requirement, so now I have to stress and worry if that class is going to get cancelled also. What a stressful event.

I have survived my first camping trip since being diagnosed 4 years ago. I wasn’t really concerned at all about the diabetes issue while I was camping, because like I talked about in my last post, it was not true outdoor camping. We had huge meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had a big bag of skittles on me almost 24/7. I didn’t experience any lows at all, and didn’t really have any issues with morning highs either. Maybe it was because I was not snacking all night long like I usually do when I am at home.
However, I did have two slight problems that worked themselves out very easily. While I was in the pool, my infusion set decided it wanted to peel off my skin and float around the pool for a little swim, but we were almost done anyway, so I only went about 25-30 minutes without it. Later that day I went to test my sugar and I couldn’t find my meter. After searching for about 20 minutes, I found it in the backseat of the car, with all the windows up. So the meter didn’t work for about an hour because the strips were almost melted, luckily I had that other vial of strips chillen next to the cooler.
It was not the campsite that I thought it was, this was a cowboy ranch. It had a lot of free range animals, wild horses, cows, and bulls. There was also a rodeo with bull riding and all that was pretty fun to watch. I am glad to be back home though in my air conditioned office right now, but the vacation was fun to do.

I just have one question, how do you all find time to blog everyday? I know I’m not the only one who is extremely busy and doesn’t even have time to eat some days, but how do you manage to do it. I try to because it does calm the nerves and relieves the stress in the middle of the day. I’ve been a little worried about my blood sugar levels throughout the night because I just keep waking up with like 300 levels. I have tried so many damn things. Eating Taco Bell last night I know didn’t help.
Also, yesterday I was so busy at work that I totally forgot to eat lunch. I ate at 8:30, testing throughout the day. At about noon my level was 123, and then I didn’t test again until about 5, and without eating all day, my sugar went up to 230. I don’t know why my sugar goes up when I don’t eat, I always expect it to go the opposite way.
Our local JDRF walk is coming up this Saturday. It’s at the beautiful Mizner Park in Boca Raton, FL. If you’re in the area, please come out and join us, it should be fun! Please, you can support the fight for the cure!

Hello everybody!! I’m finally back from vacation and back in Florida. I had an eventful and busy week. First night I was home, I took two of my nieces out trick-or-treating, and I didn’t eat any of their candy. OK, maybe 1-2 pieces. The next day was my birthday, so my family and some friends went out to happy hour and they had the servers sing happy birthday to me and bring a brownie sundae, which was amazing.
The next day was finally a day to relax and just hang out and do some stuff around town. Friday was the rehearsal dinner, and also the Pizza Hut buffet that I promised my girlfriend and niece I would take them to. I didn’t over over eat, so my sugars stayed in good shape.
Saturday was the wedding and the reception, which a lot of Miller Lite was consumed, but once again my sugars were in great shape.
The main concern was my A1C number that neither my doctor nor I liked too much. It was 7.6! The previous was 7.1. I had a feeling it would be kind of high because of all the highs I was having in the morning. But I changed some basal rates, and I think it may be solved because I have been waking up in the low 100’s again, finally!
I started my diet and some better glucose monitoring this week, and so far so good. I told my girlfriend that for too long I have been acting as a “part-time” diabetic, which I can not do any longer. So I have tested nearly 30 times since Monday afternoon, which could have been the same I did in a month in the past.

Ok, first off I want to thank Scott for the great advice. I really appreciate it. The thing is, I just bought for my first grill recently because of getting my first apartment. So steak, chicken, hot dogs, and burgers have been my main meals. I grilled out just about every night back at home in Pennsylvania, then I came down here and I grilled maybe once or twice in two years. Now that I have the grill, its all I want to do.
So, because of Scott’s advice, I tried to lay off of the grilled food last night. I tried the veggie meal. Some nice veggie lasagna. It probably was not as good as it would be from someone who actually knows how to make it, but anyway thats besides the point. So here is the important part.
Pre-meal blood sugar level at about 7:30 was 144. An hour after eating it was at 176. I had a quick little snack, it was a high fiber snack, I couldn’t resist. At around midnight I tested again and my blood sugar was 210, “How is that so?” Ok, so I will set the alarm for 3:30 a.m. After getting my senses together once the alarm went off, I put the blood on the strip, and…….. 290!! I was so tired, I calculated the insulin amount I needed and took the correction. I woke up and was 114 at 7:30 a.m.
So, once again I’m back to asking myself, “What the hell is going on at night?” Even though I barely get a good night’s sleep now as it is, I will have to continually start to test throughout the night for several weeks until I figure this thing out.
Once again, thank you Scott for your advice, I’m open to all the help possible.
