Done With Vacation, So Sad

August 17th, 2009 by Chris S

Well it’s Monday again and now it’s back to work after a week of vacation.  So sad  I will never fly back into town late on a Sunday ever again.  My flight was delayed about 40 minutes, and it took 30 minutes for my bag to come out so I didn’t get home last night until close to midnight and here I am up at 6:45 a.m. making coffee.  Didn’t have a chance to unpack, unwind, or un-anything.  Vacation was fun however.  It’s also time to get the weight back down, eating habits back under control, and the blood sugars to better levels.

I have to change my infusion set also, it’s starting to itch and irritate a little bit.  I put it in Saturday morning, so I guess it’s time to come off.  It was really hot in PA so the sweat started to pull it off anyway.  For the first time ever I wore my CGM for the whole sensor life.  Usually it falls off, or I end up taking it off before the sensor life is up.  Mostly it’s because I wear it golfing and it always falls off during golfing.

Well tomorrow’s post should be a little more fun because there will be pictures to add, but I haven’t been able to load any of them up since I just got home about seven hours ago and needed some sleep.

Well I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Taco Bell and My Blood Sugars Don’t Mix Well

August 3rd, 2009 by Chris S

Another Monday.  This weekend went by a little fast, they all do now.  Friday night I went to the movies and saw “Orphan”  It was an ok movie, I pretty much knew what was going to happen at the end about 30 minutes into the movie which kind of made the rest of the movie suck.  I think I have seen way too many movies, maybe I should just try not to think during movies and just watch them.  Saturday was extremely boring, I didn’t really do much of anything.  I finished watching the Benjamin Button movie which is just weird.  All the while, my blood sugars were perfect!  Sunday was a different story however.

In the morning on Sunday I went golfing, which I am frustrated with because I putted like crap because I was being rushed and I could have possibly shot under 90 if I putted like I normally putt.  Anyway, after golfing I was really hungry and I hadn’t really chaeated on my diet so I said screw it and went to the bad bad bad Taco Bell.  And boy did I enjoy my taco bell!  My b lood sugars later on at night however did not.   I went up over 400 at one point and was very thirsty.  Being dehydrated from golfing didn’t help much either, but it was also because of the highs.

I finally got the numbers down to a good level.  121 before I went to bed and at 3:00 a.m. I woke up sweating and feeling all weird so I downed some Skittles.  Woke up with a 175, but it’s better than over 200 I am used to.

Football starts tonight, I am a little nervous, scared, and excited.  I have NEVER been a head coach before, so there are a lot more responsibilities now then just coaching kids normally.

Well I hope you all have an amazing day.

Swim, Run, Ride, Lift, AHHHH Relax!

July 14th, 2009 by Chris S

A few weeks ago I thought about how cool it would be to complete a triathalon and then I thought about how I can’t run far, I can’t swim far, and I can probably ride the bike long enough.  Then it hit me.  Start training for a triathalon.  Obviously, I will be nowhere near where I need to be, but I can at least train in all 3 areas.  So yesterday I went swimming.  Today I am going to ride the bike, then tomorrow I will run and then lift a little on Thursday.  Eventually I will like to do all 3 during the same workout, but that is still some time away.

While doing all of this, I plan on trying to keep my CGM connected even though it seems to fall off everytime I start sweating a lot.  Mainly when I golf.  That reminds me, I haven’t worn my CGM in a few weeks, better put it back on since my doctor asked me to where it all the time from my last visit until my next one, oooppss.

Is everybody ready to test at 4 p.m. today.  I sure am.  I had some pasta for lunch, so I’m not so sure my number is going to be one of the lowest, but it will be fun to see where everybody’s numbers are.

Well I hope you all have a fantastic day.

Golf, Cookout, Fireworks, Golf – The Diabetes Way

July 6th, 2009 by Chris S

Hope everybody have a great Fourth of July.  I can’t really complain about the whole weekened.  Golf Friday, relaxation and fun on Saturday, golf on Sunday.  But then back to work on Monday.  Which is also the last day to submit your story on GlucoStories to win a trip to meet Charlie Kimball.  GlucoStories is excited to have as 2 of the 5 judges the local West Palm Beach JDRF chapter and also Kerri.

On to the next thing.  At golf on Friday, I had a pretty bad low, 65.  It was extremely hot so it came out of nowhere.  It is almost impossible to hit a golf shot when your blood sugar is low.  It’s hard enough to hit a good shot when it is normal, ha!  I have 1 of the largest bags of Mike n Ike’s in my golf bag, so I was pretty good.  I ran out of Gatorade, so that was not an option. I recovered in about a hole and a half, but at least I had a good excuse for shooting an 8 on the 15th hole.

On one final note, I am setting a goal of reading 1-2 new diabetes related books a month.  So, I need all your advice on which I should read.  Please help.

Have a great day everybody!

Lost Infusion Set While Golfing

June 22nd, 2009 by Chris S

Golf this weekend was an adventure, to say the least.  I put a sensor on Friday night so I could keep track of the levels of my sugar throughout the whole 18 holes.  I went early to go to the driving range, which was a bad idea in itself because I used up all of my bad shots.  It was 7:30 a.m. and about 90 degrees already.  Some from constantly bending over to tee up a new ball and the sweat, my sensor decided that it didnt want to stay on any longer.

Hmmm, if the sensor didn’t want to stay on, I could only imagine the plans that my infusion set had.  Luckily, the night before I thought it may be a good idea to bring another infusion set and iv pads and dressings and my insertion device.  Hole # 2, infusion set falls out.  I tested my sugar multiple times and it was staying steady around 120-140.  I made it to about the 8th hole where there ending up being a bathroom so I stopped in quickly and re-inserted the infusion set.  This one actually stayed in the rest of the course.

The group behind us caught up to us a little bit because of that stoppage, but oh well, that’s what happens when you play golf with a diabetic!

Well, have a great day everybody!

Low on the Golf Course…Unfortunately I don’t mean my score!

June 15th, 2009 by Chris S

Well the Magical journey is over, but it was a great year.  Now it is time to spend my sports time on the Phillies until the Eagles start up their mini camps.  I am not going to dwelve on that too much, but get into experiencing some highs and lows on the golf course this weekend.

On Saturday I went out golfing and it was hot!  Like 90 and not a cloud in the sky hot.  When I got to the course at 8:30 I had not had a chance to eat yet, but had a bagel with me.  I also had a Gatorade (Tiger Woods version, all the help I can get on the course), and some crackers.  I tested before I got to the cart, 215.  Ok, a little high for the morning, but I was starving so I had to have some of my bagel.  I bolused for half the bagel and ate the first half within the first 2 holes.

Tested again on the 7th hole and I was around 150, not bad considering I drank half a Gatorade.  I “felt” myself getting low, keyword is felt since I did not test, and I ate the rest of the bagel and bolused a little less than for half since I felt I was already low.  Well, my senses were right, but not right enough because I must’ve been lower than what I had thought.  On the 15th hole I felt myself feeling weak again, so I tested, 67.  Whoaa buddy, time to get some crackers in me before I get up there to rip that next driver off the tee.

So, I put down about 3-4 crackers, hit a decent tee shot, ate 2-3 more and hit the next shot, then grabbed 1 or 2 more and put in a putt.  Alright, playing a little low was lowering my score also!  Obviously, that is not a true statement, but after that hole I drank a little more Gatorade, buddy I was playing with had an extra one, and by the 17th hole I was back up to about 100. I fnished strong on 17 and 18.

This is the first time that I went low on the golf course because I am usually a little higher when I am out there.  I usually have some Skittles on me, but I finished them the last time that I went golfing and forgot to replace them.  Good thing I brought crackers last time and they were still in the bag.

Well, this weekend when I go out, I am going to bring a sandwich, Skittles, crackers and 2 Gatorades with me.

Hope you all have an excellent week!
