Low, Weird, Tie Weekend…. Read on, it makes sense.

November 17th, 2008 by Chris S

What a weird weekend this was.  The worst part was the tie game between the Eagles and the Bengals.  This game drove me crazy, and was also one of the ugliest I have ever seen.  I remembered the last tie that took place because my dad is a huge Pittsburg Steelers fan and we were watching the game.  Also, on Saturday, I some how ended up at the local sports bar to watch the UFC fight.  This is where my blood sugars got all crazy.  My sugar went up really high when I was eating chips and salsa, but then they just dropped like crazy and went down to about 55.

I had a lot of chips in front of me, but they disappeared pretty quickly once I saw the number 55 on the meter.  I also had a really low experience yesterday that just came out of nowhere.  I was in the middle of cleaning up my house when it happened, so I had no problem stopping what I was doing, test and then take the time to eat some Skittles to get my sugars back where they needed to be.  The only part I hated about the Skittles is that I am trying to lose weight, so when I eat them or drink some OJ, it has like 150 calories, 15 minutes in the gym just to recover from a low.

Today’s weigh in is 238.  I didn’t reach my goal, but this week’s dieting is going to be a lot more intense.  I didn’t hit the gym as much as I wanted to last week.  I played tennis 3 nights, but I wanted to go to the gym right after playing tennis, but I never made it.

One final thought, my roommate was making fun of me because of the Eagles tying and being in last place, and then I stopped for a second, and said…. hey, we’re still the World Series Champs though.  So I wanted to take a little time today to recognize and not forget the the Chase Utley led Philadelphia Phillies, World Series Champs, Philiadelphia Phillies that is.

New Diet and Goals Every Monday

November 10th, 2008 by Chris S

Well, it wasn’t such a good weekend for the Eagles, but what are you going to do?  I don’t want to talk too much about it.  However, my blood sugar levels were perfect throughout the entire game which surprised the heck out of me.  Today is the start of a strict, strict, diet to lose about 10 pounds before Thanksgiving rolls around.

I plan on cutting my calorie intake down to about 1,000, and burning about 200-300 per day from exercise.  Right now, I am intaking nearly 2,000 a day and that’s not working out so well.  The only part that is making me eat so much is the snacking at night that I am taking in almost 400-500 calories after dinner…. not a good idea when you are trying to lose weight.  If I cut out that snacking, I can lose 5-6 pounds a month just by that!

Today’s weight… the highest I have ever been is 242.  Every Monday I will put up a new weight and give a new goal, and we’ll see if I can meet it. My goal for next week is 237.  5 pounds in one week may sound like a lot, but it is just so much excessive fat that it will come right off with 1-2 games of tennis.

Also, A1C time is approaching fast.  I don’t remember exactly when the last one was, so I have to check up on it and see.

October 28th, 2008 by Chris S

A rain out are you serious?  I can’t believe this.  Philly has been waiting over a decade to win a championship and they have to postpone it another freaking night!  And now, it feels like the Ray’s have a lot of momentum going into tonight’s game since our amazing pitcher is now out and they scored the last run of the night.  But, my blood sugar didn’t go above 150 last night during the game, amazing huh!

It was 113 when I went to sleep, but after I had coffee and breakfast this morning and took some insulin, I tested an hour later and I was 227.  I didnt have a meter handy right before I ate, so I kind of guestimated!  But I’m all good now.  I am going on a cruise this Friday, so I am getting prepared for that.  I know, I never told anybody about the cruise yet in here, but I don’t think many care anyway, ha!

I just received my new insurance card and everything today, so time for me to do some research on a new endo!

Considering CGMS and Weight Loss Roadblock

September 24th, 2008 by Chris S

I am debating whether or not to go on the Medtronic CGMS or not.  I really would love to do it, but at this particular time, hopefully only another week or so, I am without insurance, so I can’t really afford it.  My A1C is decreasing, but I will not be satisfied until I consistently have it under 6.5.

I am also concerned that I can’t seem to get to my next weight loss goal.  I have lost 10 pounds which I knew would be very easy to lose, but now it is coming off a lot slower.  I’m still exercising and eating health-ier.  Healthier is the key word there.  I am still not in a full blown diet, but I have cut down on my carb intake which should help a little.  I have also cut out the Dunkin Donuts sausage, egg, and cheese on an english muffin that I was having pretty much 4-5 times a week.  (Saving money on that too!)

My roommate is a gym freak and workout-aholic, so it is good to have him there to push me and to get me into the gym even on the days I don’t feel like going.  For those of you who are pump users, do you take your pump off when you exercise or do you keep it on?

When I am running or on the bike, I take it off because it is always flopping around and extremely annoying.  However, once I am done with that, I will put it back on when I am lifting.  I also take it off when I play tennis too.  It is so hard to figure out, sometimes my sugar goes up when I am exercising and sometimes it goes down.  It has to be something to do with what I am eating before I start working out, I don’t know.

By the way, I just tested…. 255….. the morning highs, can’t seem to cure them!

Diabetic Supplie While Fishing

September 18th, 2008 by Chris S

I played tennis yeesterday for almost 2 hours.  When you play it correctly, it is way too tiring.  I was hurting all last night and then all day today.  I was playing with my roomate, who is pretty good also, so he whooped me the first set, but then the second one we split, then we stopped playing because we wanted to go fishing also.  When i went to go fishing, I made sure that I took my bag that has my sugar tabs, a gatorade, meter, and of course sunflower seeds.  When we got to the canal, my roomate looks at me and says, “give me a worm.”  After I told him that I didn’t have any he says, “well what do you have in the bag, I thought you had all the fishing stuff in there!”

So after explaining to him that I don’t carry fishing stuff in that bag, but my potential life saving supplies, we decided to just go back to the house and watch tv.  I watched the movie, “The Eye” last night and it was extremely scary.  I was so freaked out after watching it, I thought I was seeing grey shadows all night long.

This weekend I am going to the Brad Paisley concert featuring Jewel at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL.  These days scare me because the concert starts at like 7 I guess, but the tailgaiting starts at about noon-ish.  I’ll also be missing football all day long, but what are you going to do?  I will set a goal of testing 5 times while at the event, I need to start meeting these goals.

No Exercise All Week… STOP RAINING!

June 12th, 2008 by Chris S

The following are thoughts from my head while at work so far this week:

Monday - 1:00 p.m. Beautiful day outside, I can’t wait to go home and run.  5:00 p.m. Hmm it is going to storm really bad. 5:30 p.m. well no exercise because it is raining.

Tuesday - 1:00 p.m. Beautiful day outside, I can’t wait to go home and run.  5:00 p.m. Hmm it is going to storm really bad. 5:30 p.m. well no exercise because it is raining.

Wednesday - 1:00 p.m. Beautiful day outside, I can’t wait to go home and play tennis.  5:00 p.m. Hmm it is going to storm really bad. 5:30 p.m. well no tennis because it is raining.

Thursday 1:00 p.m. Beautiful day outside, I can’t wait to go home and run.  Is this starting to sound like the movie Groundhog’s Day or what?!!?  No exercise at all this week because of the rain so STOP RAINING!!  I have not been able to do any type of outdoor exercising at all, and it is making me mad.  As soon as I started to get into a little groove here, the weather takes me out of it.  I can see the clouds rolling in already.  There are only a certain amount of sit ups and push ups that I can do trapped inside.

Anyway, on a better note, I am going to look at a few houses this weekend so I can finally get out of the apartment I am living in right now.  End of August can not come fast enough.  But before that comes, my girlfriend’s 21st birthday is approaching fast, the end of this month, and I am just finalizing all my plans for it.  She doesn’t know what I am doing as a surprise, and I can’t really tell you all now either because she may be reading this, (I love you, if you are!), but I will tell you all later, not like you all care as much as she does :) .

Well have a great day everybody.  Today is a busy day in the Life of a Diabetic!

Pasta Makes Me High!

June 11th, 2008 by Chris S

My blood sugars were really good all day yesterday.  I had one high of 250 after I ate some pasta, but other then that, they were excellent.  Once again, pasta makes me high.  You know what really ticked me off this morning?  I love to come into the office in the morning and check out some of the most recent posts from all my fellow d-bloggers from the diabetic news headlines, but this morning the past 20-some posts were nothing but recipe after recipe.  That is what I consider spam.  I like to see new recipes, but 20-30 all at once?

I don’t know if anybody else really cares about that, but I basically use that as my blogroll and skim through the latest posts, especially with the ADA San Francisco just ending people have a lot of interesting posts and comments from it.  Well, anyway, yesterday it stormed really bad so I couldn’t go running, but I tried to get a work out inside the apartment.  Any quick indoor exercise techniques anybody uses, with no exercise equipment being used?  Today is tennis day and it seems like as of right now it shouldn’t rain, but who knows in south Florida.  I always say that weather people and baseball players are the only ones who don’t get fired for being right or doing good only 30% of the time.  But if the weather people down here were baseball players, they would be getting sent to the minors because they’re only batting about .100 right now.

Today is the sad day I hate, opening my last box of infusion sets and reservoirs, that means time to re-order, and with still no luck with my insurance coverage, its back to paying for them myself.  Thankfully I only pay about $110 for my infusion sets, because I had to get more of them one time before and it was almost $200.

Ouch! Infusion Set Hurts Today

June 5th, 2008 by Chris S

Ouch!  My infusion set is hurting me today, but I do not have an extra one with me at work.  I usually try to keep one extra one every where that I would ever be in need of one, but then again that means I would need to remember to carry around the inserter everywhere I go too, which is not going to happen with my memory.  Anyway, everytime I have taken a bolus today, only twice, it has hurt like hell!

I have had it in for 3 days, but generally I go up to 5 with it.  I know this isn’t a great idea, but I haven’t had anything bad happen from it yet, so I guess I won’t learn my lesson until something bad happens.  Tennis was great last night, I had an amazing workout.  It gets better and better every week.  My girlfriend has also gotten a lot better of the past couple weeks, because I can’t take it easy anymore, I really have to play hard, which gives me a better work out also.

Well, the next thing to add to my list of never ending crazy tasks to do is start looking for a new house.  I am deciding I do not want to live in an apartment anymore, I want a house.  I know I may not be able to buy a house because I am lucky enough to live in pretty much the worst real estate market in the country, Palm Beach County, FL.  But then again, I have several advantages, but I can save that for a new blog I may be starting, probably not though, I won’t ever get around to it.

All of this craziness is just another day in the Life of a Diabetic

Exercising, Situps, Shin Splints - No Pain No Gain

June 4th, 2008 by Chris S

Why is it that every single blog today that I have came across has mentioned Obama?Other then that mention, I will not discuss it.  What I want to vent about today is something that I came across in the Annetics blog today.  Everytime that I work out, my weight goes up.  It is very frustrating.  Even after eating a low calorie diet all day and working out I still am about 10 pounds heavier then I was when I woke up.  My problem is that I just have a gut that does not want to go away.  There is a six pack sitting in there, and no not beer, but that too, but when I was in high school I had one, so there is potential to get it back.

Situps don’t really do me too well because I don’t think that they are even helping me at all.  And running is just starting to become way too painful.  My shin splints are incredibly painful.  I had them in high school, but after my knee surgery they just became horrible.  I run about 0.5 mile and I can barely even walk anymore.  I am breathing fine and not tired, but it just hurts way too much to go on.  This is why I need an exercise bike so I can just ride all night long.  But I guess the saying is right, no pain no gain!

Well, just another day in the Life of a Diabetic!

A Good Day of Blood Sugars

May 28th, 2008 by Chris S

Yesterday was a good day for my blood sugar levels all day long.  The highest I went was 150, which for me is a success.  I also tested about 10 times yesterday.  It went up high after I went for a nice little jog.  I disconnect my pump while I run because it always falls off while running.  But then of course, this morning I wake up with a 252 reading.  Must increase over night basal again.  Pretty soon it’s going to be like 100 units of insulin over night (that’s an exaggeration!)

Well, speaking of running, my body is killing me today.  Muscles that I haven’t used since my days of playing football in college are now being used again.  And my good ole’ shin splints are coming back.  After running a mile yesterday I was breathing perfectly fine, but I could barely even walk because my shins were absolutely killing me.  I thought I stretched my calves out good before I went running, but I guess not.

I will have to stretch even a little more today when I play tennis.  I have been getting better and better at tennis every week I play.  I am ready to go play against some of the good guys now, and really get a workout.  Well, off to work.

Just another day in the Life of a Diabetic!
